The triple exponential average (TRIX) indicator was first presented in the 1980s by Jack Hutson, who worked as an editor for a magazine on technical analysis in the area of stocks and commodities. The TRIX indicator is an oscillator that is primarily used to identify oversold and overbought market conditions whilst it can also be used as a momentum indicator. TRIX is known as Triple Exponential Moving Average and is based on a 1-day difference of the triple EMA. The indicator was developed by Jack Hutson in 1980s. TRIX is a remarkable trend following-indicator: its main advantage over the similar indicators lies in its ability to filter a large portion of the market noise. The TRIX indicator is the 1-period percentage rate-of-change of a triple smoothed Exponential Moving Average. A triple-smoothed EMA is basically an EMA of an EMA of an EMA. Say we choose an 18-period lookback span. The calculations will look as follows: TRIX = 1-period percentage change of the triple-smoothed EMA. As a trend following indicator, positive TRIX values imply that an uptrend is in place whereas negative TRIX values denote that a downtrend is in place in the market.
